Richmond VA Kitchen Remodel - Step 6 Installing Cabinets

Richmond VA Kitchen Remodel - Step 6 Installing Cabinets

Richmond VA Kitchen Remodel - Step 6 Installing CabinetsOnce we had our ceramic tile floors installed AND grouted it was then time for Step 6 in our Richmond VA kitchen remodel which was installing cabinets!

As I mentioned in a previous post, we selected a painted white cabinet since our kitchen is in the back of the house and we don't get a lot of natural light. We chose the Merillat Classic Somerton Hill cabinet in the Cotton color for its look and affordability. Of course I gravitated towards the $33,000 cabinets however that was almost our entire budget but the Classic offered a great alternative and provided a semi-custom look.

While we hired a professional to install our cabinets, this is something you can certainly do yourself as long as you know what you are doing! We learned this first hand after one of the contractors accidentally hit one of our newly hung cabinets and it fell off the wall and cracked! It turns out, the cabinet wasn't screwed into a stud and this could have been a dangerous situation if the mistake had not be caught early on as it could have fallen on one of our kids. So, make sure the cabinets are secure to the wall before putting anything in them! Watch this video by This Old House on how to install kitchen cabinets

Pros and Cons of White Kitchen Cabinets

As a Richmond VA Realtor I get to tour a lot of properties and see the design choices of home owners first hand. I also hear a lot of feedback from buyers. Some buyers love white kitchen cabinets while I have had other who absolutely hate them. It certainly is a preference. Here is a list of pros and cons of white kitchen cabinets, in my opinion:

-They are classic and will never go out of style

-They offer a very clean and fresh look to a kitchen

-There is no limit to the amount of decorative touches and paint colors

-They can show dirt easily

-The paint can chip off and you will need a filler or paint pen

-They show dirt easily (I could repeat this sentence often!)

In my opinion, you really can't go wrong with white kitchen cabinets but you have to keep them clean by wiping them down and ensuring your kids (or husband!) uses the decorative hardware to open them. I can't tell you how many times I have seen my children getting their grubby hands all over MY new cabinets, ha! Speaking of hardware, we selected brushed stainless steel pulls and half moons, giving our new kitchen a very modern yet classic feel.

Do You Paint Before of After Installing Kitchen Cabinets?

Now, this is something I wish I could change. I was not home the day the cabinets were installed and thus didn't realize the contractor would be installing the cabinets BEFORE painting the kitchen walls. While this is acceptable, it isn't MY preferred method. Why? Because the sub-contractors ended up getting brown paint on my white kitchen cabinets! Had they painted first, this would not have been an issue and would have created a more cohesive look. We had to have them touch up paint several times and there are still areas where the line isn't completely straight. While it probably isn't noticeable to many, we invested our hard earned money into our new Richmond VA kitchen remodel and I have high expectations. So, before you start your remodel be sure to ask your contract the steps in which things will be done. I really wish they would have painted and then installed the cabinets!
