Givers Gain, Building a Business Upon Relationships

Givers Gain, Building a Business Upon Relationships

When I was in 9th grade I was the Co-Captain of the Majorettes squad while my best friend at the time was the Captain. We worked all summer preparing new routines and practicing them with our fellow majorettes. It was a fun time in my life and a time in which I learned an important lesson - Givers Gain.

See, for each football game one majorette was selected to do a solo routine in the middle of the diamond formed by the marching band. You had to try out and it was kind of a big deal to a young teenager - who doesn't love having a few minutes in the spotlight?! As the co-captain I was automatically given the first game while the captain was given the honor to perform at the last game of the year. When the first game arrived, I did my thing and was handed a beautiful bouquet of flowers from my friend and captain. How nice!

As the season went on, I watched the captain give each featured majorette a bouquet of flowers when they walked off the field. I didn't think much about it other than it was a nice gesture. It wasn't until the last game, HER TURN to shine, that I realized the power of Givers Gain. The captain closed our season with an awesome routine and when she walked off the field she was SHOWERED with a dozen bouquet of flowers from the majorettes she had given flowers to. It was an amazing sight and I was a little jealous! Why didn't anyone give ME all of those flowers? Well, because I had not formed relationships with them all and I didn't fully understand what I know now from the great Zig Ziglar: You can have everything in life you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want.

Building a Richmond VA Real Estate Business Upon Relationships

I feel very blessed to have learned this lesson early on in life and have carried the practice on into my Richmond VA real estate business. When I first started out as a Richmond VA Realtor, I did what everyone told me to do - I called expired listings, for sale by owners, and asked every person I encountered if they knew someone looking to buy, sell, or invest in real estate. Long story short - this didn't work. Now, some agents have built THRIVING businesses doing just that and to each his own. If it works for them, great. However, I always felt sick to my stomach when I made those calls. Why? Because for ME, it wasn't a call coming from contribution. I was calling to get business, not foster a relationship. Some will argue that they are coming from contribution because the prospective client NEEDS our help. That very well may be true, but I didn't believe it in my heart so I didn't feel comfortable with the practice. Reading from scripts and using rebuttals never felt natural to me.

One day I decided I wouldn't cold call expired listings or for sale by owners anymore. I wanted to build my Richmond VA real estate business by building relationships. So I started networking, helping others get what they needed. This approach suited my personality MUCH better! I stopped asking people if they knew anyone looking to buy or sell and I started asking them what I could do for THEM. It made them feel good and it made me feel of VALUE. Do I receive business this way? Absolutely! People want to work with people they know, like, and trust. I am often asked to lunch by vendors who want me pitch me about their services and for an hour I eat, listening to them go on and on about what THEY need and want. This never goes over well. I don't know them to trust them and now I certainly don't like them as they made it all about their needs. I am polite but I never call them back, especially when they hand me 20 cards. However, the vendors who take me to lunch and ask how they can help me help my clients...well, they are the ones I end up working with and make part of the RVA Home Team

Richmond VA Real Estate Agent

Why do I share all of this with you? Because I know how hard it is to cut through the clutter on the Internet when you are searching for a  Richmond VA real estate agent to sell your house or help you purchase a home. I like to "talk" directly to those who have landed on my website so they have a sense of who I am and what I stand for. In this ever evolving, head spinning tech world, many consumers will fall for the flashy websites and the empty promises. It is my hope that by reading my posts you will get to "know" me as so many former clients have proclaimed. And that is how it should be. Real conversations about real life and real estate!

Looking for someone who will put your needs first and understands that Givers Gain? Give me, Shannon Milligan at the RVA Home Team with Jefferson Properties, a call today!
